Val Hazelton - President

I have been a sewer since my early teens, but only dabbled a bit here and there with quilting. I attended a MPQ meeting at the invitation of a friend in the fall of 2004 and was so inspired by all the wonderful ideas in Show and Tell that I signed up on the spot.

Now, being a sewer doesn't necessarily mean you know how to quilt - I had no clue what a fat quarter was, hadn't been initiated into the mysteries of a rotary cutter or a 1/4 inch foot, and all those rulers! So, I took every opportunity I could, borrowed books and magazines from the library, and signed up for whatever workshops I could fit into my schedule. And, I still sign up for workshops whenerver I can (have even taught a few) because you always learn something new.

My tastes in quilting are quite eclectic, but I prefer to work on a small scale and enjoy projects requiring scrap fabric or recycled clothing - I have an amazing blue jean collection! I like paper piecing and applique, not so crazy about patchwork, but I am getting a lot better at perfecting a nine patch square. I've dabbled a bit with textile art and find fabric postcards great fun to create (and even more fun to send).

MPQ has provided me with so many opportunities and volunteering for the last three quilt shows has been a wonderful way to get to know some of the members. It's the comraderie of working together and getting to know other quilters that has enriched my own quilting endeavors and encouraged me to try new things.

Happy Quilting!
