President's Message

Welcome to the Manitoba Prairie Quilters website!

The upside of all the rain this summer is one of the lushest gardens I’ve ever had, once I figured out how to keep out the slugs.  I haven’t been quite as successful in keeping Mr. Bunny away.  With this latest round of wet weather, he’s moved from under the tomato plants into the bean patch, and carefully nipped off leaves and stems to cover the ground so he has a mud free place to sit while he nibbles at the buds.  So much for a second round of beans, but must say the first ones were mighty tasty.  It’s also been the earliest I can remember having ripe tomatoes, I’m usually scrambling to cover the plants to keep them from freezing.  I was a little puzzled to see one of my prize plum tomatoes in the middle of the back lane, when it occurred to me that the neighbourhood squirrel must have snuck one, and dropped it while he was scurrying across the overhead cables.

Regardless of where you spent your summer, I hope all of you had some time to quilt.  I know many of you take projects to your summer homes at the lake, or on summer travels. We expect to see many of those new projects at our regular Show and Tell segment of our monthly meetings!   My goal was to work on UFO’s, not start anything new, and no new fabric purchases unless needed to finish a project.  Well, I did keep to the first two goals, but I have this weakness for remnant bins and half price bargain table fabric sales...

Program planning for the upcoming season is well underway.  The first meeting in September will showcase a member’s quilt journey, as well as an introduction to the incoming Executive and what their recent quilt experiences have been.  There’s nothing like seeing what other quilters are doing to inspire one’s own creativity.

To those new to our Guild or contemplating on joining, a special welcome.  Be sure to sign our guest book and make contact with the greeters or someone at the membership table so we can take you under our wing.  With a membership approaching 300 and an average attendance of 125 at monthly meetings, we don’t want you to get lost in the shuffle!

See you in September ...
Val Hazelton
